Grieving Charlie Kirk : An Update
Suggested podcasts to consider
I hope everyone had a nice and restful weekend. I woke up today dazed and exhausted — one of those mornings where you have a full night’s sleep and still wake feeling wrung out. Still, it’s good to be home and back in the office. The sun is out in Laguna. The ocean, sparkling.
Over the weekend, I cleaned out my fridge, did laundry, organized cupboards. I also devoured quite a few documentaries, read magazines, and napped in the sun. I honestly can’t remember the last time I let myself be so lazy. I’d almost forgotten what a luxury it is to do and plan for nothing.
Meanwhile, everyone in my circle is still processing the aftermath of Charlie Kirk’s assassination. Since the shooting, days feel oddly suspended — as if the inconceivable froze us into a lingering state of shock, stripping all sense of structure from the hours. On the other side of this horror a new week is nudging us forward despite frayed nerves and rattled minds. But, that’s grief for you.
Last night, locals in San Clemente gathered at our outlet mall for a memorial at dusk. Thousands crammed together in the parking lot to honor Kirk. California may lean blue, but this particular pocket of Orange County is firmly conservative. When I moved here—mind you— I was a staunch liberal, horrified by the flood of Trump support. Looking back, during a pained pandemic pivot, it’s strange to remember who I was then — ducking cameras at anti-lockdown rallies, surrounded by eagle-adorned patriots in red MAGA hats, terrified of being outed as a Trump supporter.
So much has changed since then. Everything has changed since then.
This weekend I’ll be on the road headed to Phoenix to cover Charlie’s funeral. Plans are still taking shape, but I expect to be live on site Sunday interviewing supporters and others who’ve come to mourn his passing.
Mourning Across the Country
As for the shooter, we’re still learning who he was and why he did what he did. Within my own network, people are split on what theuy trust and believe: some trust the official account — a troubled young man firing from a rooftop 200 yards away. Others refuse to accept what feels like a conveniently packaged narrative. I suppose I’m caught somewhere between the two, which is why my last post — Conspiracy vs. Narrative — feels like the best way to cover these things moving forward in order to sift through fragments and decide what rings true across conflicting media spectrum.
A lot is happening this week, so you might find double posts in your inbox. I apologize in advance for the pile-up. Later, I’ll have a layered recap by a guest editor breaking down the latest on Luigi’s court case ahead of tomorrow’s hearing, as well as an invitation into my office to discuss personal aspects, the latest on the Epstein email leaks, new audio and insight from Nick Tartaglione, Elizabeth Holmes’s surprising online resurrection, Trump’s UK visit, and another packed edition of Housekeeping — which will include a passionate plea to rally around saving David Lynch’s beloved brutalist estate.
For now, I’ve arranged a few bullet points with breaking news about Charlie Kirk + two podcasts I think are worth your time. I watched both over the weekend.
As sidetone: I find it incredibly weird is that AI seems to refuse to acknowledge news of an assassination, flagging it as “false” anytime I request a grammatical edit. Why — when the fact is noted in Kirk’s official bio — does ChatGPT refuse to acknowledge this as reality? Very strange…
Line Outside the Kennedy Center For Last Night’s Vigil
RFK revealed that Charlie Kirk “persuaded” him to take a role in Trump’s administration
“While speaking on Real America’s Voice, Kennedy called Kirk a “critical ally.” He said that Trump had offered him the position to run the public health agency, but he admitted that he initially felt “tentative.”
“I didn’t know whether I wanted to handle Medicaid, Medicare portion, which is the biggest, you know, economic behemoth,” Kennedy said.
“And he really persuaded me that I should do it, and then he helped me, not only making calls to the president himself, but telling me people I should call,” he added.” — Nj.com

Trump shares call for media ‘accountability’ with ‘Charlie Kirk Act’ after shooting: The movement - sparked by a viral TikTok video by a user named Ellie May, who demanded media accountability and urged Donald Trump to push for the law. Trump shared her video on Truth Social— amplifying demands to “revive and rename the Cold War-era Smith-Mundt Act. The online petition backing the proposal has already received over 17,000 signatures so far, calling for steep fines on media companies and social platforms accused of spreading propaganda, lies, or baseless accusations that endanger lives.”

I take pride in being open-minded and having friends from all walks of life. I welcome honest conversation and even enjoy a good debate - especially on taboo topics. But seeing people celebrate Charlie’s death crossed a line for me. How callous do you have to be to rejoice in the loss of a young man, a husband, and a father - as if he were some villain like Ramsay Bolton from Game of Thrones who was skinning people alive?
I’m not American, but I live here, and I’ve never witnessed so much hatred from a party of “peace”, or so many God complexes from a group of people that hates religion.
Unrelated to Charlie Kirk, RIP.
But please don’t ever call yourself lazy after making a list of all the housework you did all weekend! You’re super powered! Thanks for all you do!
