I believe the basis of the article was mental health in aviation. Working in aviation myself I can attest to the fact that they have a lot of work to do in our own country with pilot mental health. There’s still so much stigma. If you have any mental health issues and or have to take meds you’re grounded.
We had something recently even in our own company where a pilot took mushrooms (doesn’t show up on a drug test) to try to combat his depression and we had an incident while he was jump-seating (not flying)
I believe his wife is doing a lot to bring awareness to this issue. I am hopeful that the unions will step in.
The co-pilot staying quiet was because he was the one at the yoke...the other guy was manning all the other controls...there was no time and he did ask but by then it was too late. Completely sad and preventable but I don't think the co-pilot should bear any blame.
Apologies but what is this : „On a clear June morning, Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787 bound for Frankfurt, fell from the sky seconds after takeoff from Mumbai.” Flight was from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick…. Nothing to do with Mumbai or Frankfurt
Passengers and 12 crew onboard- not 260 as you claim. Survivor passenger was also not thrown from the aircraft- he escaped through emergency exit… only to point view inconsistencies
According to Wikipedia, "All but 1 of the 230 passengers and all 12 crew members died in the crash. An additional 19 people were killed and 67 were seriously injured on the ground." That's where the number 260 comes from-the total killed.
Malcolm Gladwell wrote about a similar topic in Outliers in connection with Korean Air pilots being too deferential to seniority and how a cultural emphasis on hierarchy ultimately causes plane crashes.
“The Rehearsal” is an odd show that recently approached this topic in a unique way. It’s not for everyone but it’s nice to know that at least it’s getting some traction in general. Seems like common sense that psyche evals should be included for positions where you represent a company while simultaneously being in a position of protecting lives. Thank you for spreading awareness.
The most recent season of The Rehersal on HBO was all about aviation and this crisis. It showed how toxic the culture of not speaking up is between pilots and co-pilots is and how severe the need for mental health help is.
It’s presented as a form of comedic entertainment, but there were several valid points made, many of which were echoed in this article.
The reason I have a fear of flying; is because my step Dad, who was a Captain for Qantas, Emirates (and who knows where now) - was extremely mentally unstable, violent, controlling, fraudulent and somehow has been able to travel around the World working for prestigious airlines; avoiding criminal consequences. So; I absolutely do not trust “psych testing” or anything else they do to pass pilot testing and keep themselves and others safe.
If as the evidence seems to point to the pilot taking his and the lives of the passengers on board ( before I get pulled up I know one survived ) then it’s a giant stretch to put the state of this man’s mind at trumps door , I’ve no time for him,the combination of giant ego and tiny intellect is not a good mix for someone holding so much power but he didn’t cause this , ,
What universe are you living in? The media paints a picture that is mostly false. Real world experiences say the complete opposite of what the media says. I can't say personally, but I don't think we have to worry about the fuel line getting cut in the next 3 years. We are going to be okay. Calm down there Alan.
My daughter lives on Kauai. Several days ago she was flying from Kauai to San Fran, a red eye. As they were getting ready to takeoff the plane started smoking and then a fire broke out. All were evacuated safely. 😫😫😫
How does India’s licensing requirements relate to this administration?
In the first month of Biden’s administration, there were 10 fatal crashes.
In the first month of Trump’s administration, there were 7.
Regarding Air Traffic Control Incidents:
In 2024, there were over 1,700 runway incursions reported.
Of those, 9 were classified as serious, meaning there was a high risk of collision or actual contact.
Investigations have pointed to outdated systems and staffing shortages, especially at busy airports like Reagan National, where a culture of “just make it work” was cited as a contributing factor to recent accidents.
Plane Malfunctions
During Biden’s Term:
Several high-profile mechanical failures occurred, including a Boeing 737 Max 9 losing a door plug midair. United Airlines experienced fuel leaks, missing panels, and stuck rudder pedals. Emergency landings due to engine and landing gear issues were also reported.
Under the Current Administration:
Mechanical issues have continued, including a Delta jet flipping on landing in Toronto. Investigations are ongoing into multiple emergency landings and equipment failures.
So…6 months compared to four years. Talk to me in 3 1/2 years…
As of Aug 2025 1,970 incursions in US. You have valid points but the data when they report it is evident that we are now in BIG trouble. I'm expecting there will be less reporting of any data soon so your 2024 numbers will be our last facts.
My husband is a pilot. And a 30+ year career clinical therapist. I agree with his assessment. The stigma of seeking help for mental illnesses has to stop. If we have cancer, a toothache, a gaping wound we seek medical interventions. Mental illness is often a chemical imbalance in our system which with proper treatment can be managed. So as a world we should recognize some people get cancer, some people can’t cope as well as others.
It’s put a valued and honorable career at risk to say you’ll be grounded for good because a death of a loved one dear to you has you spiraling and you need help. Just as much as a flight check pre-flight is important so is a mental evaluation. Pilots should be made heroes to self report they’re not 100% able to fly on a given day. “Im choosing to save 230 people’s lives today by turning this flight over to another pilot.”
Plus there should be fail safes. There is no reason a pilot should be able to shut down fuel lines on take-off. It’s pretty ridiculous that he was able to do that. 😳🫨
I personally don’t feel it’s a matter of competency nor a reflection on the Trump administration. I feel that this is a twofer, meaning, it’s intentional, “they” (globalists) WANT this to reflect ON THE Trump administration, they LOVE blaming him for EVERYTHING & “perhaps “ a springboard into GROUNDING us at some point to further the globalist agenda of “climate change” & implementing 15 minute cities. Ultimately, “they” don’t WANT us traveling. It’s all about control, covid was the dress rehearsal.
I’m not a paranoid person but I am a critical thinker, & there’s a really BIG PICTURE IN all of THIS…
Insightful...scary and chilling. Let's not forget the elephant in the room: the Covid shot causes ENDLESS neurological disruption, chemical imbalances, bio-electrical damage, and, it stands to reason, emotional and psychological damage- not just physical...
Scary causation(and if someone writes " correlation isn't correlation" I'm sending a Tren de Aragua Venezuelan hit man to their home): a pilot frieñd of mine who is high up in leadership in the pilot's union -reported that illness, missed work days - are up 65% since Covid shot rollout(this number, among the fittest work demographic in the world).

Are

Jessica Reed Kraus writes “he climbed OUT the exit door” reread & you’ll see.
Malcolm Gladwell wrote about a similar topic in Outliers in connection with Korean Air pilots being too deferential to seniority and how a cultural emphasis on hierarchy ultimately causes plane crashes.
Great article.. Megan Kelly did a deep dive on this also.. same conclusion
Did she? How recent? I want to watch.
Episode 1110.. July 16th .. was very good..

As soon as I started reading this article I thought of "The Rehearsal" as well! Def a quirky show, but very interesting!
Wow this article is wild I had not heard any update on this untill now mind blown !

Mental health is so important, even with those involved with transportation on the ground, trains and big rigs.

Terrifying!! Thank God she's ok.
I’m so grateful 🙏🏼
Maybe hiring Sean Duffy to head the agency was a BAD idea.
Maybe the plan to turn everything over to AI is a BAD idea.
I have to agree, Jessica. We weren't having these problems to this extent pre this administration. They are simply not competent.

Can I like this again? This had zero to do with our aviation system in this country. Good grief quit stretching people.
Sorry as of July 1. My bad.
Thanks for the clarification;). It will be interesting to see how things shake out…I fly in two weeks…🙏🤞.
Good luck to you... We fly in November... *holding breath*

This is absolutely terrifying! Makes me never want to fly,
I agree! I’m flying on Friday and this doesn’t feel good.
I think that’s the idea, FEAR…
