You’re not lying about the stylings / grooming habits of these circles! I’ve been in politics for years and in 2016 I went to the Fox News debate in Detroit then a Bernie Sanders rally in Northern Michigan, I’ve laughed about it ever since. The debate was at the Fox theatre - furs, diamonds and pearls all glam and old money. Pure class aside from the bikers behind us throwing water bottles at the stage and the would be president of the United States taking about the size of his dick to the abject horror of the rest of the crowd. The next day the Bernie rally was in an old roller skating rink and absolutely reeked from the natural deodorant, unwashed hair and stale Patagonias ripening in the humidity of the packed crowd. Young progressives waiting in line for 3 hours in the cold and snow wearing nothing but soggy $5 ballet flats and a Torrid skater dress with no jacket. Seeing the difference within 24 hours was really jarring.
I remember in November of 2021, when masks were abundant, restaurants were all restricted to outside dining in cold, empty parking lots, and cities were being occupied. We had to stand 6 feet apart, order our groceries to be delivered, and everything was “dangerous”. I felt so sad and I was just desperate to feel like the world was right again...I talked my sister into coming with me to Trump National Golf Course. I hoped that maybe in that darkest of times, I would find just a tiny glimpse of what life had been like just a few years earlier.
We sat on the small patio, ordered a bottle of Trump Champagne and for a couple of hours, while the sun set over the Pacific, I felt like everything was right again.
The other tables were full, the diners around us seemed healthy, happy and thriving, no one was wearing a mask, and I felt like I had finally found a place where it felt normal and okay to be happy and free and alive.
I feel like that is how I would feel visiting Florida and Mar A Lago.
For me, it’s not really about Trump. It’s about being surrounded with people who want to be free, who want to embrace life, who want to celebrate who we are as a community, as Americans. Who still believe that we are the greatest nation in the world.
I feel like that has been lost (and maybe that is because I live in LA?)
